What amoxicillin is used for
Amoxicillin is a penicillin-class antibiotic that works by interfering with how bacteria build their cell walls, causing susceptible bacteria to die. It's commonly a first-line choice for ear infections, sinus infections, strep throat, and some urinary tract infections.

Augmentin: amoxicillin's combination form
Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate) is amoxicillin combined with clavulanate potassium, an ingredient that has no antibacterial effect on its own but blocks an enzyme (beta-lactamase) that some bacteria use to destroy amoxicillin before it can work. That broadened coverage is why Augmentin is often reached for when plain amoxicillin isn't expected to be enough — including some sinus infections, dental infections, animal/human bite wounds, and infections that didn't clear with amoxicillin alone.

Because the clavulanate component increases the chance of diarrhea, taking Augmentin with food is commonly recommended. As with any antibiotic, complete the full course even if you feel better early.
What azithromycin is used for
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by blocking bacterial protein synthesis, slowing bacterial growth rather than killing bacteria outright. It's commonly prescribed for community-acquired pneumonia, certain sexually transmitted infections, and as an alternative for patients with a penicillin allergy who need treatment for an infection amoxicillin would otherwise cover.
A notable practical feature is dosing convenience — a classic "Z-Pak" course is 5 days, and some indications use a single dose — which can help with adherence. Azithromycin's label carries a caution about QT interval prolongation (a heart rhythm effect), which is relevant for patients with existing heart rhythm conditions or who take other QT-prolonging medications; tell your prescriber about your full medication list.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take amoxicillin if azithromycin didn't work, or vice versa?
Only if your prescriber decides that's appropriate. They target different mechanisms and different bacteria, so switching isn't automatic — and if a first antibiotic failed, your prescriber may want to reassess the diagnosis rather than assume a different antibiotic is simply the fix.
Which one is used for strep throat?
Amoxicillin (or penicillin) is generally the first-line choice for strep throat in patients without a penicillin allergy. Azithromycin is typically reserved as an alternative for patients who are allergic to penicillin.
Is Augmentin the same as amoxicillin?
No, but it's closely related. Augmentin is amoxicillin combined with clavulanate, an ingredient that blocks a resistance mechanism some bacteria use to inactivate amoxicillin. That combination lets Augmentin cover some bacteria plain amoxicillin can't — which is why it's often prescribed for infections that didn't respond to amoxicillin alone, or where broader coverage is needed from the start (e.g., certain sinus or dental infections).
What are the most common side effects of Augmentin?
Diarrhea and other GI upset are more common with Augmentin than with amoxicillin alone — the clavulanate component is the main reason why. Taking it with food can help. Contact your prescriber if diarrhea is severe or persistent, which can (rarely) signal a more serious complication.
Can I drink alcohol while taking amoxicillin, Augmentin, or azithromycin?
None of these three has a dangerous direct interaction with alcohol the way metronidazole does. That said, alcohol can worsen GI side effects and dehydration while your body is fighting an infection, so moderation or avoidance is still the safer choice until you finish the course.
Does amoxicillin or azithromycin make you tired?
